I hope you enjoy a few of Lauren and Dana’s images. Their wedding was a total blast and I had an absolutely great time working with them! The thing about candid photography is that it really reflects the feelings and moods of its subjects. Lauren and Dana were a perfect fit for this approach to capturing weddings. Their guests were fun and relaxed. Their location was breathtaking. Their first sight was true and genuine. And their chemistry and joy was unmistakable. The proof is below in the moments that were captured!

“My husband and I searched the GLOBE for a venue for our wedding, but finally decided upon Seattle, where we’d met and spent several years before moving back to the East Coast. However, in the course of our globe trekking, we’d fallen in love with a photographer’s work in New Orleans, so we knew the style we were looking for to really represent us. While searching out photos of our considered venues, I fell over Lucas’ blog on his website and we were hooked!! He did the requisite “staged” photos, but 98% of the shots from our wedding are exactly what we wanted – candid shots of our friends and family being themselves, but caught through the lens of a consummate professional such as Lucas, thus they were elevated to art!” – Lauren

Jed & Miranda | Maple Valley | Washington

Amazing! Jed and Miranda’s celebration could not have been better planned and executed. Miranda’s mom spent months making sure the flowers and landscaping of their Maple Valley home were stunning! Every detail was planned out. Home made pies and and an old-fashioned candy bar took the place of a cake. Extra barbecues were brought in to grill steaks and vegetables for the 180 guests. Home made marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate toasted over bonfire, while strings of white lights and tiki torches gave a festive atmosphere to the reception area. Jed and Miranda are a really down to earth, fun couple. Their wedding fit perfectly with their personalities. And for their honeymoon? Three weeks hiking the John Muir Trail! Seriously, these two are so cool!

Miranda and the girls had just enough time before the ceremony to get in a rowdy hand of cards.

Jed and his close friends wrote a song and practiced just before the ceremony.

A swarm of helpers and friends set things up perfectly. Every details was thought out. Home baked pies of almost every variety, a old fashioned candy bar, bright umbrellas, tri-tip, flowers, flowers and more flowers.

Miranda’s cousin quit his job in Wyoming, packed his pickup and drove 20 hours straight just to make it to the wedding!

Wedding Albums

Albums are my favorite part of each wedding. From the first click of my shutter on your wedding day, I’m trying to capture moments as they happen and build a story-telling narrative. One of the most powerful ways of telling a story is through still photography, using multiple images paired together. Think of a single image as a paragraph. Just as the most compelling writing demands building a flow from each sentence and paragraph to the next, so do images and pages of wedding albums. Building this flow demands careful choices to determine which images work with each other to become a cohesive paragraph that tells your story. This is not an easy thing to do, but it is what makes wedding albums great.

So much information is shared online these days. That’s great! But a wedding album is real; you can get it out to show to friends, family and even take it to work. There is something that’s just exciting about turning the pages of your album for the first time, your album filled with your stories and your memories.

I wanted to share a few photos of Holly & Clay’s stunning Fine Art Album. Impact-full images are paired with clean, elegant design and an eye popping cover. The pages of my Fine Art Albums have a creamy matte finish that feels like silk. This album ended up with 23 spreads. Follow the link at the bottom of the post to see the entire album.

Yingli & Eric | Wedding | The Willows Lodge

Yingli & Eric’s classy, down to earth wedding at the Willows Lodge allowed their personalities to shine through. They are from California and Boston, so I only met them for the first time a few days before the wedding. They were both great to work with. Yingli’s wedding dress is as stunning as she. I was able to spend several hours with them before any formal photographs needed to be taken. It’s great to be around to capture unexpected moments as they happen.

Take note of Eric’s cuff links. He was short a couple lapel pins, so he had to use a paper clip on his cuff. He’s a lawyer, so it seemed fitting that he had one handy.

OSPW Wedding Photography Conferance

I had the pleasure of attending Open Source Photo West’s conferance last weekend in Seattle. California wedding photographers Gene Higa and Mike Larson were two of the many great speakers. We also spent a bit of time with some great models. It was pretty funny at times with 25+ photographers trying to photograph one person.

Capturing the Feeling of your wedding

Planning a wedding is all about the details. And there are so many! The invitations, favors, cake, flowers, table settings, dress, food and countless other things. All of these things make great photographs that show how beautiful your wedding looked! It’s great to have colorful and fun photographs of all of those things that you put so much work into choosing! But so often the human details are overlooked. It’s those little moments and gestures that can be so telling about what you wedding felt like! Great photography does more than show what something looked like, it shows what something FELT like. I just love this photograph of a bride and her closest friend in prayer just minutes be for she is married. Sometimes, the little things can say volumes!

New Wedding Albums

I just got these killer wedding albums in! The first is a Fine Art album, and the matte pages feel silky and smooth. Images just fly off of the bright white pages and I really like the lack of gutter between the two pages. It’s perfect for designing full spreads! To me, design is about letting the images communicate clearly. I put a lot of time into editing and choosing what images work best with each other to tell a compelling and truthful story. The end result is stunning, simple and timeless.

The second type of album is a Flush Mount. This is a two tone Japanese book with a cloth cover. The texture of the fabric feels great, and the pages are just a little thicker than the Fine Art Album. Choosing the right album for each wedding is a lot of fun. Rose and Ben’s Whistler, BC wedding had a down to earth and friendly vibe. This album really matches with their personalities.

I’ll be getting quite a few more albums in soon, so I’ll post those as they come in!

I just came across this face from a wedding that I photographed this past summer. Kids at weddings seem so easy to photograph. The’re full of energy and busy, so they just act like themselves. Hopefully her mom still has this photo to show years from now when she is thinking of getting married…
