What are your memories worth?

How much do you charge? That questions seem to be the first that many brides ask.

On a recent evening, a couple of Seattle wedding photographers and I talked over beers. The question came up about how many brides chose their wedding photographer based on price. Many brides seem to put price high on the list, while quality seems to be a lower priority.

Most photographers have heard horror stories from brides who went with a cheap photographer and the results were less than spectacular. The question is, what would they pay to bring back the moments that their cheap photographer missed? $5,000? $10,000?

What would their children or grandchildren pay to see great images from their wedding? What is the value of having true art for their home?

I’ve dedicated the past 8 years of my life to making the most compelling photojournalism possible. I studied under former Directors of Photography for the National Geographic at a top school for photojournalism. I fought to work as a photographer in the highly competive newspaper industry. Every day, I try to make better images than the day before. I try to make images better than any other photographer has made.

I do this because I think photography has tremendous value and importance. What else at your wedding is more important than great photography?

Tacoma and Bellevue Wedding Shows

After two busy weekends, the wedding shows in Tacoma and Bellevue are over. They ended up being a lot of fun. I met a lot of great people. It’s so interesting to hear about how couples met and to get to know so many different personalities.

There were a few couples who really knew photography. Their questions were great, and It was nice to just talk about photography. After all, I am a photographer because I love photos!

I had the good fortune of being right across from some great vendors at both shows. In Bellevue, I was just across from Zarah Loves Food. They had a chilled fire and ice soup that was top notch.

Booking the right photographer

In every bride’s quest to find the perfect wedding photographer, the
subject of price is unavoidable. Of course you want to find a great
photographer, cheap! But realistically, it won’t happen. Trust me,
this is a lesson you don’t want to learn the hard way! The more you
learn about photography, the more you realize you get what you pay
for. There is no way to cut corners and still get great photography.

If your budget really is tight, you might prioritize. Try thinking
about what from your wedding day will really last?

It comes down to memories and images. A real photojournalist will
deliver on both. You will be able to live in the moment on your
wedding day. You won’t have to spend hours posing for pictures when
you would rather be living your day!

But most importantly, a real photojournalist will capture all of the
moments that naturally happen when you are able to be in the moment,
living your day! Great memories and great images. I don’t think it
can get any better than that!

Take a lesson from Ashley. I photographed her for a newspaper story
in California. Ashley and her friends got together for a giant car
wash to raise money for her wedding! I know this idea is not for
everyone, but there are ways. Be creative, talk with me about it, we
can find a way!
